What is a Limitation? How We Can Become More Fully Who We Are

by Deb Schnitta

Spirit, the expression of our essence, housed within our Soul, exists in a state free from limitations. Our Soul returns each incarnation to be able to explore the possibility of the unlimited state of being while connected to matter. The matter is the density and beauty of our physical bodies, which includes our emotions, our thoughts and our spiritual consciousness.

Each layer of who we are has certain characteristics and qualities that allow for experiences within the layers of consciousness that we are connected to. If, for instance, the mind (as part of the physical body) explores a life experience solely from the basis of the personality, it will observe and have one set of experiences. These experiences will be largely influenced by the comfort of the mind. This comfort emerges as part of past experiences, as well as ideas or concepts the mind currently embraces as true.

The same life experience seen through the doorway of the Soul will have different meaning and significance. Often the situation is understood from a higher perspective, and events, no matter how challenging for the personality and mind, are seen by the Soul as opportunities for exploration. It may be that learning occurs here simply as the Soul witnesses how the personality responds to life events, with two seemingly separate aspects, Soul and personality exploring their own aspects of the same situation.

As the personality becomes more interested in learning or living life from a place of expansion, it opens to the opportunity of Soul influence. This may be in meditation, through following an impulse from within the personality itself, or through an act of consciously creating with the Soul.

How a personality initially becomes interested in life being different is often through the presence of limitation. Some area of life is not as fluid, loving or easy as the mind desires. The personality is now motivated to explore how else this area of life could be. It may read books or talk to others. It may be that the area of life is so significant, such as a health crisis, that much emphasis is placed on things changing--NOW!

From here, a limitation is the opportunity to recognize consciously the surroundings of our life. They may have been this way for a long time but we have endured or barely noticed their presence. The limitation, as a discomfort or source of yearning from within, gets our attention and we as personalities engage.

A second expression of limitation is that which keeps us from experiencing who we truly are, in the largest sense of the word. In this way, we are constantly given the opportunity to evolve, to move to our next level of discovery and expansion. It is intrinsic to our Soul's motivation for incarnating, to discover the free flowing movement of our light while connected to the vehicle of our bodies.

Limitation here is the awareness of the boundary of consciousness in a given situation that allows us to both recognize and choose what comes next. It may be, for instance, that we, as personalities, expand during meditation and experience a state of altered consciousness as a result. By doing so, the mind and body experience peace that is different than could be achieved from the personality simply by thinking about it. Peace from this place of expansion occurs as layers of awareness expand and join the larger flows. Often the mind has little awareness of what transpires in achieving this heightened state and yet recognizes peace in some way. It therefore sees this place of surrender as positive.

Each successive opportunity the personality has to enter into the state of expansion softens the mind's view on surrender. Even areas not known consciously to the mind have the opportunity to relax and update their own perspective about surrender while this simple act of relaxing and expanding during meditation occurs. What had previously been a limitation is now seen by the mind as a recognizable aspect of the process of expansion.
