Expansion: Living from Grace

by Deb Schnitta

When we open our hearts, we create a connection with the larger part of our Selves. Having an open heart allows our mind to relax and the history of our past to be just that, a series of experiences that occurred before.

When we live consciously aware of the impact of our words we begin to change our world view and thus the world we create. Saying, “I hate my job” over and over again does nothing more than reinforce the unpleasant aspects of the situation. Finding one or two moments of the job that are filled with gratitude changes the entire dynamic. The job is the same, the tasks have not changed, and yet you find your body relaxed, your heart open and the pervasive thoughts of dissatisfaction have diminished.

Why? These two thoughts may seem very disconnected from one another, and yet they form the foundation for the very place of expansion we all seek; the moments of grace that fill our lives where everything flows, where peace and abundance abound, and where we know no limitations. In these moments we are living, for the moment, in grace.

Fortuitously, practicing conscious awareness around our thoughts helps to open our hearts. A mind experiencing joy and excitement is directly related to the heart’s ability to be open. An open heart allows free flowing consciousness to move, which in turn enhances our ability to expand.

Gratitude is an easy expression of aliveness and vitality in our daily lives. When we actively seek to express gratitude, we change the way we view the world. It may be that we slow down to notice what else is present in our lives, to hear what is in our hearts, what actually brings us joy.

Each time we learn to turn our awareness toward gratitude, we allow our larger consciousness to step into the forefront of our experiences. Since gratitude connects us with vitality, it encourages our hearts to open. An open heart is necessary for connection with our larger Selves. Connection with our larger Selves brings about great change in all aspects of our lives.

In order to step outside the confines of the mind, where the primary mechanism of orientation (how things are viewed) is cause and effect, we must be able to step into the expansion, to see the moment we are questioning with new eyes. From this newness, the actual qualities of the experience are illuminated. It is from here that the right next action emerges, the moment of deeper awareness unfolds and the connection with peace occurs. Having a momentary pause from the habitual orientation of the mind allows the possibility for the mind itself to recognize that not only is there another way to see and experience the world, but that this newness is indeed exhilarating. In this moment, the mind chooses to expand and takes another step closer to living a life of grace.
